Protect Against Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes are not only annoying, but they also transmit several diseases like Dengue, Zika, Malaria, Yellow Fever and other diseases. To protect against mosquitoes, we can do simple things like insect repellant sprays and wear long sleeve shirts and pants. However, there are several other things we could do to better protect against mosquitoes around our homes.
Screen Windows Help to Protect Against Mosquitoes
Screen windows are the first line of defense to keep mosquitoes out of your home. Install new screen windows where ever they are missing. Replace or repair any damage or broken screens. For small openings in the screens, most local hardware stores sell a screen repair patch which can be used to properly cover these holes. Do not use clear tape or duct tape, over time they peel off.
Get Rid of Lawn Clutter
The second line of defense to protect against mosquitoes is actually a preventive measure. Store items in your garage or shed that are in the backyard and collecting rainwater. By doing this, you not only declutter your lawn space, but also you prevent the mosquitoes from laying their eggs. Mosquitoes can breed and lay their eggs in any ponding clear water. They can lay their eggs in a space as small as a bottle cap.
Keep Your Gutters Clear
Make sure that gutters are properly sloped and draining all of the rainwater out of the gutters to protect against mosquitoes. No water should remain in the gutters after a rainstorm ends. Water collected in gutters could also be used by mosquitoes to lay their eggs.
Properly Maintain Flat Roofs to Protect Against Mosquitoes
If your home has a flat roof and your Zafras inspector informed you that your roof is ponding, protect against mosquitoes by hiring a licensed roofer to make the proper repairs. Ponding water in the roof, just like water collecting in the gutters, are great areas for the mosquitoes to lay their eggs.
